Our client is one of the country’s largest and most well-known producers, distributors and marketers of premium quality, branded food and pet products for the U.S. retail market. The Company also produces and distributes private label food and pet products.

They currently have a new opportunity for an R&D Technologist – Mechanical Designer Pet R&D. ***This role will initially be located at their Research and Development Center on the West Coast. In early 2017, the role will relocate to a newly built, state-of-the-art Research and Development Center located at the Corporate Campus in the Midwest. They will offer relocation benefits to support the dual locations of this role.***

BROAD FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

The R&D Technologist will use his/her technical abilities to (1) research, design, and develop mechatronic systems, machine component designs, molds to support food product, process and packaging development projects; and (2) bring to life via 3D prototypes new designs for dry pet food and treats, and rigid/semi-rigid packages. He/she will bring to life conceptual designs, conduct mechanical performance analysis, develop detailed designs, and oversee part fabrication and testing. He/she will be responsible for providing analytical, empirical and numerical modeling support ranging from the first principles analysis via predictive computational models to CAD designs, which will strongly contribute to the advancement of key business objectives. The Technologist will play a critical role in developing, integrating, analyzing and designing components and systems in support of the development of novel pet food products, packages, technologies, and processes.

PRINCIPAL CONTINUING RESPONSIBILITIES IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE:

• Design and build functional prototypes, devices, packages and test beds per project needs through 3D printing (additive manufacturing) and conventional machining equipment such as CNC.
• Assist in performing and conducting FEA/CAE simulations and CAD modeling to evaluate design performance against thermal, structural, fatigue and related engineering targets and specifications.
• Participate in root cause investigations using CAE studies to identify and implement improvements and resolutions.
• Assist Product, Packaging, and Process Development Teams in design prototypes and feasibility models for proof of concept testing.
• Originate specifications, drawings, control documents, verification and validation plans, procedures, reports, and other documentation in support of design and development activities.
• Identify the best tools to effectively solve engineering design problems and to develop/optimize designs by leveraging appropriate mix of first-principles, analytical, computational and experimental methods.
• Generate robust designs (systems, subsystem and components) by establishing design space with design options and tradeoffs, managing critical parameters, using design for manufacture principles as well as geometric dimensioning and tolerance tools.
• Integrate internal and external innovation capabilities to solve problems and deliver superior results.
• Conduct technical assessment and deliver recommendations related to the test/pilot/manufacturing process, as needed.
• Develop sound understanding of the pet food manufacturing processes and critical control points, parameters, etc.
• Apply a variety of methods and tools to identify and solve problems.
• Incorporate learning from past experiences to make better decisions and seek input from others as necessary.
• Communicate (written and oral) complex messages clearly, concisely, and in a manner appropriate to the specific audience.
• Acquire technical expertise quickly in new areas.
• Partner with peers and Operations to create strong working relationships that drive better innovation and more effective teams.
• Maintain detailed records in a laboratory notebook and exercise intellectual property best practices to protect the interests and competitive advantage of Company brands, especially when working with external partners.
• Work closely with cross-functional partners, providing technical guidance and recommendations aligned with manager.
