JOB OVERVIEW:

Our client is a well known manufacturer of juices, jams and jellies based in New England. They seek a research scientist in their corporate research center in the Boston area.

The Research Scientist will be responsible for developing/commercializing beverage/food products, while providing scientific and regulatory affairs support as needed to help the organization meets its strategic goals. The Research Scientist will regularly interface with cross-functional teams and be the technical lead on those project teams.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct experimental design and execution of bench top, pilot plant, and plant trials where appropriate. Transform science into commercial reality by leading Technical project team to develop and launch products from benchtop protocepts to pilot plant prototypes through plant trials.
Review and provide regulatory guidance on package graphics. Work in conjunction with graphics and marketing departments to ensure compliance with FDA or other US or international regulatory guidelines.
Plan and implement specific phases of product development using strong project management skills, focusing on renovation, innovation, and technology projects.
Provide and validate recipe design and product specifications and own knowledge transfer to Quality and Manufacturing.
Create and revise ingredient statements and nutrition facts panels as requested, to ensure compliance with FDA regulatory guidelines and USDA Child Nutrition guidelines
Help translate consumer insights into holistic concepts (product and packaging).
Build and maintain effective relationships with external partners and suppliers.
Develop understanding of beverage, spreads and/or snacks consumer insights, local market activities, and global trends.
Stay abreast of forthcoming changes in regulatory policy globally as it affects core business concepts. Provide training and guidance on new provisions. Support other R&D and Corporate Quality Assurance functions as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Proven ability to take projects from concept to commercialization.
Ability to learn and gain in depth knowledge of food and ingredient standards, FDA, CFR and USDA food labeling regulations
Must have strong agility and potential to flow between product development and regulatory affairs, as the business needs dictate.
Must possess the technical skills to work in a lab, pilot plant, and manufacturing environments.
Demonstrated awareness and practice of safety procedures, GMPs, food regulations, and the implications for product/science development.
Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and influence effectively across R&D/CQA, cross-functional partners and external partners.
Must work effectively in a cross-functional environment.
Ability to demonstrate agility and ability to work in a fast paced environment.
Must be able to flow to the work as the business needs require.
Must have project management skills and be able to work on multiple projects under tight timelines.
Must be highly organized and able to prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to analyze and problem solve.
Must have a strong desire for results and ability to bring projects to completion.
Must be a champion of the product development process.
Prior experience with food, beverage and/or fruit processing is a plus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

BS required in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or other scientific-related discipline.
Academic training in food law preferred.
Minimum of 5-8 years of related industry experience
Must have experience in food science and the product development process
Willingness to travel 5-10%
Must have authorization to work in the US without sponsorship.
